Atomic energy agency backs Rwanda’s plan to integrate nuclear energy into its energy mix
The Director of Nuclear Power Division at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said the organization is ready to support Rwanda’s endeavor to integrate nuclear energy into its energy mix to meet the projected growth in electricity demand over the coming years and advance clean energy transition.
Speaking during the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Mission -Phase 1 in Kigali on March 2, Aline Des Cloizeaux said Rwanda was on course.
Fidele Ndahayo, the chief executive of Rwanda Atomic Energy Board said that the decision to host the review mission reflected the country’s commitment to uphold international standards and ensure transparency in the pursuit of nuclear energy for socioeconomic development.
“Nuclear power is not merely a scientific endeavor. It is a strategic pillar of our future. As we strive to position our nation as a hub for trade, investment, and innovation, we recognize that reliable and clean electricity is the bedrock of industrial transformation,” he said.
The week-long mission was used to assess Rwanda’s readiness and progress towards the introduction of a safe, secure and sustainable nuclear power in the country.
The discussion focused on global nuclear energy landscape, capacity building opportunities, potential career paths, and the importance of fostering gender equality in nuclear industry.
