Rwanda launches e-mobility project to accelerate transition to electric mobility

The project launched in Rwanda’s capital Kigali is set to support the electrification of road transport while promoting higher-quality, sustainable mobility options and contributing to the achievement of Rwanda’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets, according to REMA.

The project’s interventions cover four components, including enabling framework for integrated e-mobility systems, demonstration of electric mobility systems, scale-up and replication of integrated e-mobility systems and long-term environmental sustainability of integrated e-mobility systems.

Speaking at the launch, REMA Director General Juliet Kabera emphasized the need for collaborative effort toward transition to e-mobility.

 “It requires the commitment and collaboration of development partners, private investors, regulators, financial institutions, technical institutions and citizens, all working together towards a common vision,” she said.

She called on stakeholders to use the newly launched project as an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, accelerate innovation, mobilize investment and create an enabling environment for electric mobility to flourish in Rwanda.

REMA said the project worth 1.6 million U.S. dollars would be implemented from 2026 to 2030 with funding from the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Environment Program.
