Rwanda’s water supplier moves to address water shortages
The Water and Sanitation Corporation Group (WASAC Group) has announced plans to increase its water supply capacity in order to address current water shortages caused by ongoing drought in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.
In a statement Saturday, WASAC Group said it is upgrading Kanzenze water treatment plant in eastern Bugesera District and Nzove water treatment plant in Kigali’s Nyarugenge District to address the water crisis in the short term.
The statement said the upgrades are expected to increase the current water supply by 10,000 cubic meters per day within the next two weeks.
The additional water production will help improve the water rationing schedule and reduce the number of days without water in different areas in Kigali, such as Kanombe, Ndera, Nyarugunga, Busanza, and Kabeza, it said.
The move comes against the backdrop of water shortages across different city suburbs due to a long dry spell which has forced the supplier to resort to water rationing.
The Group apologized to all its customers who are not receiving adequate water supply as expected.
WASAC Group meanwhile said it has embarked on major projects aimed to address water shortages in the city and surrounding areas, where the upgrade of Nzove treatment plant would increase its production capacity by an additional 25,000 cubic meters per day from the current 86,000 cubic meters to 111,000 cubic meters per day.
It is also expanding the Karenge water treatment plant in eastern Rwamagana District with its production capacity expected to increase from 12,000 cubic meters to 48,000 cubic meters per day.
