Rwanda reaffirms commitment to protecting refugees

In a message to mark the World Refugee Day which falls on June 20, posted on X on Saturday, the Ministry in charge of Emergency Management said Rwanda continues to ensure that refugees are not only protected but empowered to contribute to their communities and our shared development by advancing socio-economic inclusion, access to services, livelihoods, and sustainable solutions.

“Together with partners, we remain committed to keeping the promise of safety alive and leaving no one behind,” the ministry said.

The day was marked days after Rwanda received the latest group of 173 asylum seekers from Libya evacuated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The ministry said the group is composed of people with different nationalities, including Sudan, Eritrea, Somali, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

It maintained that Rwanda remains committed to offering refuge to people in need.

Since September 2019, Rwanda has received over 3,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Libya.

Some 2,623 of them have been successfully resettled in third countries.

Rwanda hosts over 138,000 refugees and asylum seekers, according to UNHCR data released in April.

Global refugee numbers declined in 2025 by 3% to 41.6 million, according to the global trends report released earlier this month by UNHCR.
